After an day off yesterday, I ran a tempo run this morning:
2 miles @ 7:50 / mile
2 miles @ 6:29 / mile
2 miles @ 7:50 / mile
I started out in a typical foggy Halifax morning, however, about a mile in it started to pour from the heavens. My running shoes felt like they weighed about 5 pounds each by the end of it. My split times were right about where I wanted to be and I felt comfortable at the pace. I did, however, feel some tightness in my hip and knee which I will get to next.
After running on Wednesday morning, I went for a walk at lunch time as it was a beautiful day. A few minutes into my walk I felt something pop, for lack of a better word, and a sharp pain in my knee. This all went away quickly although I did feel some discomfort in my knee when lifting a box at home later that evening. Anyway, I decided to run this morning to test it out. While I can't say that I felt any real pain during the run, I am feeling some tightness now. I will have to make sure I stretch out well again tonight and re-evaluate from there.

Oh no! This sucks.... hope the knee will not bother you too much. You should definitely seek Dr's advice, I find it rather odd that your knee would pop on a walk.
Dude, lay off the speed for a while. I know that your running time is limited (early morn, right?), but that doesn't mean you should go out and rip off a few every chance you get. Do the junk miles. Work on form, getting your arm waggle just right, breathing, whatever. Doing speed every time out, even if you take a day off in between, is dangerous.
Maybe you could do an hour in the nights every once in a while. Put the kids to bed and just get your ass out of the house asap, before you have time to realize how tired you are. Once out, just mope six or seven 8min miles.
(No, I don't know your sched, but if you add sleep to your morning—no 5am wakeup—perhaps you can steal sleep from your evening. But, as I said, fatigue at that hour means junk miles only.)
About the walk. I have been injured once in the last five years of running, and I almost never feel any post-run pain. But if I go for a two-mile walk, my entire lower half feels like it needs a whole can of 3-in-1 oil. It's weird, but there it is. Running—no prob. Walking—aches abound. I sometimes even feel a pop sorta like the one you described—a little "collapse", a short, sharp pain, then...nothing, no significant pain. Same?
